New Partner Joins MICROBIOMES4SOY: ULPGC Brings Marine Science Expertise to the Consortium

We’re excited to announce that the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) has officially joined the MICROBIOMES4SOY consortium!

Located in the Canary Islands, Spain, ULPGC is a public university with a strong multicontinental focus, connecting Europe, Africa, and Latin America. Internationally recognised for its excellence in marine sciences, ULPGC is deeply committed to global collaboration and sustainability.

The university’s ECOAQUA Institute will play a key role in the project, contributing its expertise in sustainable aquaculture and the responsible use of marine and coastal resources.

Three leading researchers from ULPGC will be involved:

Pedro L. Castro, expert in fish tissue analysis, will study how improved soya ingredients affect the digestive health and gut microbiota of seabass. His lab will assess intestinal structure, immune responses, and signs of inflammation – these are key indicators of fish well-being.

Rafael Ginés, specialist in fish product quality, will design experimental diets, conduct feeding trials with sea bass, and evaluate the impact of different soya ferments on fish performance, health, and nutritional value.

María J. Zamorano, expert in genetics, genomics and animal selection, will analyse gene expression in experimental diets tested on sea bass, and evaluate how various soya bean ferments influence the microbiome and overall health of seabass.

Their work will strengthen the project’s mission to develop sustainable, high-quality aquaculture practices using innovative soya-based ingredients and the application of microbiome-based knowledge.

Welcome, ULPGC!
