Food System Microbiomes Conference 2025

MICROBIOMES4SOY attended the Food System Microbes Conference in Wageningen, Netherlands, from 25-28 November 2025.  Our team took part in a wide range of engaging sessions and panel discussions exploring the interconnectedness of microbiomes across food systems and their crucial roles in addressing global challenges such as  global health, mitigating climate change, enhancing circularity and sustainability, and improving nutrition and human health.

Our coordinator, AngelaSessitsch, joined a panel on bridging gaps between science and industry, highlighting new approaches through which microbiome applications can support healthier and more sustainable food systems. She also shared insights from the work carried out within the MICROBIOMES4SOY project.

Another key highlight for MICROBIOMES4SOY was our participation in the Round Table discussion “How food system microbiomes contribute to food transition pathways”. Together with our sister projects WHEATBIOME and TRIBIOME, we explored how microbiome innovation can support sustainable and resilient food systems. The discussion touched upon:

  • Microbiomes in sustainable crop production
  • Microbes as alternative protein sources
  • Circular use of agricultural resources
  • Policy frameworks for a sustainable food future

The session was moderated by Beatrix Wepner (AIT) and featured contributions from including Angela Sessitsch (AIT), Twan America (WUR), Marco Candela (University of Bologna), Abelardo Margolles (IPLA-CSIC), Simone Rampelli (University of Bologna), and Sandrine Claus (Starfish).

Complementing the roundtable, MICROBIOMES4SOY was present during the project exhibition & poster session, where we had the chance to showcase our work and connect with the broader microbiome research community. Joint interactions with our sister projects TRIBIOME and WHEATBIOME further strengthened the cooperation within the EU microbiome landscape.
